  • Resource Optimization: Cloud platforms are designed for virtualization and resource sharing. Virtual machines (VMs) can be dynamically scaled down or up based on the workload at any given point in time. This minimizes wastage of energy tagged to idle servers. 
  • Circular Economy: CSPs are also actively adopting circular economy principles for reducing e-wastage such as extending the lifespan of equipment with upgrades, used hardware refurbishment and responsible recycling initiatives. 

How Do the Numbers Add Up 

  • A leading consulting firm found that by 2030, cloud computing can potentially help in reducing global greenhouse emissions by up to 5.5%. 
  • An International Energy Agency (IEA) report in 2020 stated that energy consumption of data centers increased only by ~6% due to efficiency improvements despite a 550% increase in computing output.

All CSPs also have committed sustainability goals related to cloud which help cloud adopters manage their sustainability goals as well.

Here are some key approaches for the hi-tech industry to follow for sustainable cloud adoption: 

  • Collaboration Quotient: Cloud providers (CSPs), tech companies and policy creators should work together for setting and meeting ambitious goals for sustainability and developing standardized KPIs & metrics for measuring progress. 
  • R&D Investment: R&D needs to continue to find more energy-efficient equipment, software products and cooling tech. This is crucial to ensure that the impact of cloud on the environment is minimized.  
  • Awareness Among Consumers: Consumers need to consider environmental implications of cloud services and choose greener CSPs and support sustainable technology adoption across their landscapes. 
  • Be Transparent: Cloud providers (CSPs) must offer clear information about their carbon footprint. This should include data on their DC locations, energy sources and energy consumption, etc.  
  • Strategies for Migrating to Greener Cloud: Hi-tech companies should develop strategies to migrate workloads to the cloud in a way that optimizes resource utilization and minimizes environmental impact. 

Beyond positive environmental impact, sustainable cloud options can also assist with the following goals for organizations:
